Interactive Music Systems | Exhibition 2019 AUTh | Thessaloniki

Please find here a short video with excerpts from the works of my students created during our easter semester course “Interactive Music Systems” at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. All projects are based on Arduino programming, interfacing with various hardware sensors (photodiodes, distance sensors, switches, potentiometer, etc) and communicating with various software platforms like Live Ableton, PureData, etc.

DeFence at Τhessaloniki Concert Hall

On the occasion of the celebration of the European Music Day on 21st of June, a large scale happening is going to take place at Megaron Concert Hall of Thessaloniki at 23:00.

DeFence is an open performance for 4 orchestra conductors, 88 performers with hammers, hand wrenches, motors, sheet metal, cables, and other hardware tools used as sound actuators. The ultimate target of the performance is the disintegration of the wire mesh that surrounds the building M2.

The visual borderline, the boundaries of an image, the physical barriers, are not able to set also a sound limit. Although the conversation with any kind of restriction or borderline is in many cases challenging, in this case, for artistic reasons, such an artistic debate can be initiated only if by the end of the event the physical barrier will disintegrate. The border will be deconstructed and abolished through and within the artistic act itself.

Multiplexing at MOMus Experimental Center for the Arts | Thessaloniki

Multiplexing, my last kinetic sculpture will be presented at the MOMus-Experimental Center for the Arts at the port of Thessaloniki between 14-26 May 2019. (www.cact.gr) as a part of the exhibition Visual Symphonies

In telecommunications and computer networks, multiplexing (MUX) is a method by which multiple analog or digital signals are combined into one signal over a shared medium. The aim is to share a scarce resource. For example, in telecommunications, several telephone calls may be carried using one wire. Multiplexing originated in telegraphy in the 1870s and is now widely applied in communications. In this particular work, the idea of MUX is transferred into the sound domain. A series of logically performed processes are channeled and distributed through a transistor array, activating a matrix of micro-sound sources and building a larger, mechanically generated, soundcloud

Premiere of Mise en abîme by Altera-Shock in Riga | Latvia

Mise en abîme for ensemble and electronics is going to get its premiere, on the 30th of  October at Riga | Latvia. The performance is based on the collaboration of two modern music ensembles, Art-i-shock and Altera Veritas.

Mise en abîme, is a term used in visual arts to describe a formal technique of placing a copy of an image within itself, often in a way that suggests an infinitely recurring sequence. A common way of experiencing this effect is by standing between two mirrors, seeing, as a result, an infinite reproduction of one’s image. In this piece, I try to imitate this phenomenon in the field of sound. Fragments of music are repeated many times, each time slightly distorted, in order to create perceptually the same effect.

Premiere of 5 Movements for piano by Jana Luksts | Greece

Contemporary Music Lab presents a piano recital by Jana Luksts performing works by Katehis, Seglias, Maronidis and Spyrou. The presented works cover a wide range of styles and trends in the field of modern musical creation. An extremely high-level virtuosity is required from the pianist to perform them, as a huge amount of audio data should be streamed to the audience in a relatively short time. The concert takes place with the support of the Fulbright Foundation and the Delian Academy of New Music.

Jana Luksts is a pianist fiercely dedicated to the performance of contemporary classical music. A proponent of esoteric idioms for piano, Jana finds purpose in realizing new works for the instrument. Jana’s 2017-18 season has featured a series of solo concerts, presenting the works of Aperghis, Spyrou, Erber and Finnissy, with venues including Ypsilon (Thessaloniki, presented by Ypsilon) and St. Andrew’s Church (Toronto, presented by TO.U Collective for New Music). In June of 2018, she will be the guest artist at the Delian Academy for New Music in Mykonos, Greece. Jana will be featured as a solo and chamber artist at the Sound Symposium in Newfoundland in July of 2018. Other upcoming engagements include a series of concerts in collaboration with the Contemporary Music Lab at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AuTh.) featuring works of past and current students, and alumni of the Greek Fulbright Program.

Thursday 17 May 2018, 21:00, Palas
(State Orchestra Rehearsing Space, “Solon Michailidis”).

Graffiti | Interactive Sound Installation at TSC | Greece

Graffiti is an interactive sound installation. You are invited to use your smart devices to trigger sound events in real-time acting as composers, conductors, and performers. The system will respond to your commands and create sounds. New soundscapes can arise on the fly in a playful way – giving the opportunity for each participant to feel the excitement of music creation even without any pre-developed musical skill. Download the special app and start making sounds with a virtual symphonic orchestra!

Come and enjoy playing with it at the State Conservatory of Thessaloniki.

Froura epi Frouras at OffBorders Festival | Thessaloniki

After many years, Froura epi Frouras, my first tape piece, composed at the studios of IPSA (AHEPA Hospital) is getting a performance at Thessaloniki in the festival of electroacoustic music and performing arts OffBorders. The piece was composed after the poem by the Greek surrealist poet Andreas Empeirikos.

Accordion Concertino Premiere by P. Andreoglou and BGSU New Music Ensemble | USA

Accordion Concertino is getting its world premiere at Bowling Green University (Ohio, USA) this February featuring Andreoglou Panagiotis (acc) as a soloist performing it along with the Ensemble of New Music of BGSU under the direction of Christopher Dietz.

The piece was commissioned by BGSU New Music Ensemble and was composed a few weeks after Jean Claude Risset’s death. The fundamental structural idea is focused on using Shepard Tones, an auditory illusion first devised by Risset in the field of electronic music. The effect gives the auditory illusion of infinite upward or downward motion which can find a visual equivalent in M.C Escher’s painting “Ascending and Descending”.
